As was mentioned more than a little bit on here and in my story from Saturday night's game, player/assistant coach Jeff Bes has become only the 18th player in CHL history to score more than 500 points.
Bes said after the game he hadn't even realized he was so close to that milestone and, of course, that it doesn't mean nearly as much to him as the team succeeding.
"First and foremost is winning and trying to win a championship for Laredo again."
Obviously, he has not spent his entire career in the CHL, so that makes the accomplishment even more notable. The really remarkable thing, though, is that he only had 396 points in 462 regular season professional games prior to joining the Bucks, while he has scored his 501 CHL points in just 329 regular season contests with this team.
In his two MVP seasons, Bes had 117 and 106 regular season points, while he has posted as many as 31 in a single postseason (2006 - his playoff MVP season).
That is obviously a testament to the caliber of the players he's had on his lines here in Laredo, which is something he mentioned on Saturday that didn't make my game story but is in my notebook in today's Times.
As you may notice, my notebook also states that the team wasn't going to practice today, which is apparently not the case. To clarify, Bryan Benway told me on Saturday there would definitely not be practice today, Coach Ruskowski never returned my calls yesterday (a first, and also the reason why my notebook is so lacking in quotes) and I didn't find out otherwise until a practice schedule was e-mailed to me at 9:30 this morning.
I just wanted to clear that up and finally post a little more about Bes' accomplishment (though admittedly belatedly). I'll update about what's going on around the league and all that jazz when my normal work hours start later.
Last Night's NHL Scores: Stars 5, Red Wings 4 (OT); Lightning 3, Kings 1.
