I spoke to Coach Ruskowski about the Dan Spence signing, and many of the things he said were similar to what he told me about the two previous rookie goalies who were announced.
Essentially, these kids are coming in here without Ruskowski ever having seen them, so he's going on stats and the word of scouts and agents and hoping these kids can deliver.
Ruskowski said he isn't opposed to bringing four goalies to camp, but he doesn't necessarily expect to be getting a vet guy. Most of the ones he had an interest in have since signed with other teams, and he is going for a bit of a youth movement this season.
One thing he mentioned as justification for his confidence in these young unknowns is the play of David Guerrera, who was a rookie when he won the President's Cup with the Bucks in 2004. Guerrera had stellar numbers en route to winning the Rookie of the Year award and was a key figure to the Bucks' first title, picking up the Playoff MVP award.
You can read more of what he had to say in my story in tomorrow's Times, and I'll post some quotes on here once that gets published.
