Game No. 17 - Bucks at Killer Bees

It's funny how I always end up with more desk work than I thought possible on days that I've promised to blog... except not really.

Sorry for the lack of game day post, but I'll be listening to the game while I get my other work done, so I'll update you if anything big happens.

For more thorough updates, you can follow the game on Brian Sandalow's blog or on Pointstreak. Or watch on CHL-TV or listen on Imagen 94.1 FM. Or go to the watch party at Hal's...

First Period: Here's a big one for you - Mike Sgroi is finally in a fight. He just got his butt kicked by Brett Clouthier in a fight predicted, and probably hoped for, by many. Bryan Benway is giving this one decisively to Clouthier, so you know it really had to be a beating. ... Well, according to Sandalow's Twitter, that fight was a "dud," so I guess maybe Clouthier just got the best of Sgroi in a battle that didn't live up to expectations. ... The Bucks broke down on the power play to give the Killer Bees a good shorthanded chance, then the Killer Bees returned the favor a bit later, but both goalies (Jean-Philippe Levasseur and Andy Franck) are holding down the fort so far. ... I took out my earbud for literally 10 seconds, and I put it back in only to hear the Killer Bees' goal horn. D'oh. The Killer Bees lead the game 1-0 on a goal scored on a rebound after two saves by Levasseur. Jesse Bennefield scored it; Daymen Rycroft and Joel Irving get the assists. ... Dangit, I missed something else. Justin Styffe is headed to the box for interference for some kind of altercation with Aaron Lee, but I'm not sure what happened. Whatever the case, it gives the Killer Bees a 5-0n-3. ... As soon as I hit publish, the Killer Bees went up 2-0 with a little over two minutes to play in the period. Nathan Ansell took a shot from the point, and Benway thinks Irving tipped it into the net. ... Indeed he did. Rycroft gets the second assist. ... End of the period, Killer Bees lead 2-0, up 15-12 on shots.

Second Period: Not much going on so far in this one, but apparently Levasseur will be named the CHL Goaltender of the Month tomorrow. Good to know. ... Does Bennefield ever not score two goals against the Bucks? He just added his second of the night to give the Killer Bees the 3-0 lead. Mike Harr and Rycroft get the assists, bringing Rycroft up to three points on the night. ... Just 37 seconds later, Evan Schwabe jammed in a rebound to cut that lead to 3-1. Jeff Bes and Styffe get the assists. ... End of the period, Killer Bees lead 3-1, shots tied at 23. A late slashing call on Irving will have the Bucks on the power play to start the third.

Third Period: On that power play, Darryl Smith set up Maxime Lincourt for his seventh goal of the season to bring the score to 3-2 early in the final period. ... For some reason, Pointstreak is giving Styffe and Cody Hamilton the assists on that goal. I know the off-ice officials in Laredo always mix Smith (18) and Styffe (19) up, so I'll assume that should be Smith. ... Bucks getting another power play with a tripping call on Rycroft. ... The Bucks have tied the game with 4:31 to play in regulation. Hamilton took the initial shot, but it may have been deflected. ... Appears Schwabe tipped it in for his second of the game. ... Okay, the Pointstreak people have it as Styffe from Bes. I'm so confused! ... Lee has been called for a slash to give the Bucks a power play with just over three minutes in regulation. ... Jeremy Swanson has scored his first goal of the year to bring the Bucks back from a 3-goal deficit to their first lead of the game. Hamilton and Smith with the assists.

Game Over: Bucks come back to win 4-3, improve to 10-4-3 (23 points). Killer Bees fall to 10-7-3 (23 points). ... You know how the Bucks have been having trouble closing teams out? Apparently the key is to be losing heading into the third if they want to play it strong. Three third-period goals, first goal of the season for Swanson, three points for Hamilton... pretty crazy stuff. ... Bucks will get on the bus for the trip to Odessa as soon as they finish showering and packing up and will get the day off tomorrow due to a lack of ice.
